DATA PROTECTION IN BRAZIL: THE FIRST ANALYSIS OF THE MATTER BY THE CONSUMER PROTECTION DEPARTMENT.

The Brazilian Consumer Protection Department made an statement concerning personal data protection and privacy rules by issuing a ruling on a case involving a telecommunication giant (which was fined in 3.5 million Brazilian Reais or around $1.6 million), and described ground rules for data processing, treatment and other parameters based on the Brazilian Consumer Protection Code rules. Personal data protection is attracting a lot of attention from market and media these days because several business models are based on the obtainment, the storage and the processing of user’s personal data, which is a greater share of our daily activities nowadays.
